White Coat Ceremony

Yesterday was the White Coat Ceremony for all incoming pharmacy students. It is a ceremony that is designed to applaud ones achievement in getting into the program and to welcome us into the profession of pharmacy. There was two welcome addresses, a keynote speaker, then the putting on of our white coats, the pharmacist's oath, and a closing speaker with refreshments following. DH and Little K came and it was kind of neat. It gave us a definite feeling of yeah we finally made it, and that we weren't the only ones who thought that felt it was an accomplishment to get accepted. There are 84 student in the graduated class of 2012 with an average gpa of 3.77 and an average PCAT score of 79. We have brothers who both made it into the class, a retired military woman, I think at least two of us over the age of 30, and so on.

A friend was asking about my classes this semester, so I thought I would share, especially since she is one of my dear friends who reads this blog. I am taking 17 credits this semester, with the hours of class varied each day. On Monday I am in class from 9-12, 1-2, and 3-5; on Tuesday I attend class from 12-1 and 2-4, Wednesday is 9-12, Thursday is 8:30 -9:30 and 2-4, and Friday's I am in class from 9-12 and 1-3. I am taking Biochemistry, Pharmaceutics I, Basic Immunology, Pathophysiology, Pharmaceutics Care 1, and Pharmaceutics Care 1 lab. That covers this semester. Outside of that I have to do intern hours in hospital and retail pharmacies. In the spring I will complete 20 hours in a hospital hopefully somewhat close to here, but could be an hour or more drive away. This summer I will complete 120 hours in a hospital, possible down in Oklahoma. Next year I will repeat the same only in a retail setting. My third year I will complete another 20 hours. This will give me 300 hours of introductory experience before my fourth year where I will complete 9 - 5 week rotations before graduating. Then if all goes well I will graduate with a PharmD in 2012!
